Russian forces launched heavy air and drone assaults on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, and the northeastern city of Kharkiv overnight into January 24, 2026, killing at least one person and injuring nearly 20 others, even as trilateral Russia-Ukraine-US peace talks continued in Abu Dhabi. In Kyiv, missiles and drones struck multiple districts, igniting fires in residential buildings, offices, a confectionery factory, garages, and medical facilities; one woman was killed, and several people suffered serious injuries. In the Kharkiv region, a large-scale drone attack wounded at least 19 people (including a child), damaged apartments, commercial buildings, a medical center, and a dormitory, while rescuers saved several trapped civilians. The Abu Dhabi talks, strongly promoted by US President Donald Trump, moved into a second day, focusing on postwar security guarantees and territorial disputes, with Russia insisting on Ukraine’s withdrawal from occupied Donetsk and Luhansk under the "Anchorage formula" framework from earlier Trump-Putin discussions.
