Live News: Samosa and Jalebi to Carry Cigarette-Like Warnings, Campaign Kicks Off In Nagpur
To combat India’s rising rates of obesity and diabetes, the Ministry of Health has directed central government institutions to install prominent boards warning about the fat and sugar content in popular snacks like samosas and jalebis. This move is aimed at tackling the country’s growing metabolic health crisis, with India having 18 crore overweight people in 2021, a number projected to reach 44.4 crore by 2050. While the advisory is seen as a positive step, some argue more is needed. Critics point to unaddressed issues like front-of-pack labelling on ultra-processed foods and celebrity endorsements of such products. One expert stated, "We would like to draw the attention of the government towards policy framework and regulations which actually ban advertisements and put front of the pack warning labels which are able to reduce the demand and consumption of ultra processed food products."
