LIVE: Massive Protests Erupt In Brazil Against Amnesty Bill For Bolsonaro And Lawmakers
Widespread protests erupted across Brazil’s 26 states and the Federal District, opposing a potential amnesty for former President Jair Bolsonaro and his associates, who were found guilty of orchestrating a coup attempt. The demonstrations were sparked by recent legislative developments: on September 16, 2025, the lower house approved a constitutional amendment (PEC 3/2021, or "Shield PEC") that would limit arrests and criminal investigations of lawmakers, now awaiting Senate approval. On September 17, 2025, the lower house also fast-tracked a bill (PL 2162/23), supported by right-wing lawmakers, that could grant clemency to Bolsonaro, his key allies, and numerous supporters convicted for their roles in the January 8, 2023, uprising aimed at overturning the 2022 election results.
The coup plot reportedly involved plans to assassinate President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and a Supreme Court justice. On September 11, 2025, Bolsonaro received a 27-year, three-month prison sentence for his efforts to remain in power after losing the 2022 election, marking him as Brazil’s first former president convicted of election subversion. He has denied all accusations. Prominent Brazilian artists played a significant role in organizing and amplifying the protests, which saw massive turnouts—estimated at 40,000-43,000 in São Paulo’s Avenida Paulista alone—chanting "No Amnesty" and displaying symbolic flags and effigies. Lula has pledged to veto the amnesty bill, which faces an uncertain fate in the Senate, while global solidarity protests unfolded in cities like Berlin and Lisbon.
