India’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C61) mission suffered a rare setback early Sunday morning when an anomaly in its third-stage propulsion system led to the failure of the EOS-09 Earth observation satellite launch.
The rocket lifted off at 5:59 a.m. IST from Sriharikota’s Satish Dhawan Space Centre but veered off trajectory during the PS3 solid rocket motor phase, forcing Isro to terminate the mission.
The 1,696 kg EOS-09 satellite – designed to provide all-weather imaging using C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) – failed to reach its intended 524 km sun-synchronous polar orbit.
