India’s Ministry of Defence has cleared the acquisition of 114 Rafale fighter jets from France’s Dassault Aviation in what is expected to become the country’s largest ever international weapons purchase. The deal, valued at 3.25 trillion rupees, is aimed at addressing the Indian Air Force’s fighter squadron shortfall as ageing aircraft near retirement. Reports indicate that a significant portion of the jets will be manufactured in India under the Make in India programme, alongside provisions for technology transfer.
