Hurricane Ernesto has unleashed its fury on Puerto Rico, bringing heavy rain, widespread flooding, and a catastrophic island-wide blackout that has left nearly half of the US territory’s residents without power. The Category 1 hurricane, which is expected to strengthen into a major storm, has already caused significant damage, with more than 640,000 customers losing electricity and 23 hospitals forced to operate on generators. The storm has also disrupted daily life, with schools and government agencies closed, over 140 flights canceled, and roads blocked by fallen trees and debris. In the town of Toa Baja, known for its vulnerability to flooding, residents are anxiously bracing for more rain as flash flood warnings remain in effect.
