For the first time since the Kargil War in 1999, Pakistan has admitted to playing an active role in the war with India. Pak’s Army Chief Asim Munir made a big admission on on Islamabad’s role in Kargil as he mentioned, "Thousands of martyrs sacrificed their lives for the country in the wars between Pakistan and India in 1948, 1965, 1971, and Kargil in 1999…"
Islamabad had previously denied direct military involvement in the Kargil conflict, labeling the infiltrators as "Kashmiri freedom fighters" or "mujahideen." They claimed that Pakistani forces were merely "actively patrolling" the area while "tribal leaders" occupied the high-altitude positions.
