LIVE: American Airlines Boeing Flight Evacuated After Landing Gear Catches Fire at Denver Airport
A dramatic incident unfolded at Denver International Airport when American Airlines Flight AA3023, bound for Miami aboard a Boeing 737 MAX 8, experienced flames erupting from the left main landing gear during takeoff around 2:45 p.m. local time. Officials say it was a maintenance issue affecting the tire.
All 173 passengers and six crew members evacuated safely using emergency slides amid black smoke rising from beneath the aircraft. The Denver Fire Department extinguished the fire by 5:10 p.m., and only one person required hospitalization with minor injuries. The flight was removed from service for maintenance inspection, and a replacement aircraft took over for Miami departure.
This incident came just months after a similar emergency involving another American Airlines plane at Denver in March, when a fuel leak and improperly installed engine parts caused an in-flight fire during taxiing. That aircraft also suffered minor injuries and prompted an NTSB investigation into potential maintenance failures.
