A political firestorm has erupted over Ayodhya’s grand Deepotsav, with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav at the centre of the controversy. He questioned the massive expenditure on traditional diyas, suggesting inspiration be taken from Christmas illuminations instead. Yadav remarked, ‘Why do you have to spend money on lamps, candles and all this nonsense?’. The statement, made just ahead of the celebration which aims to light a record number of over 2.6 million diyas, drew a fierce backlash from the BJP. The ruling party accused the SP chief of having an ‘anti-Hindu mindset’ and insulting traditions that also support local artisans. Leaders hit back, saying those who once kept Ayodhya in the dark are now troubled by its celebrations.
