The Ministry of Home Affairs has cancelled the FCRA license of activist Sonam Wangchuk’s NGO, citing alleged misuse of foreign funds and repeated violations of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act. This comes amid violent protests in Ladakh over the demand for statehood, in which four people have died. The government alleges discrepancies in the NGO’s funds, including a donation from a Swedish donor for programs that it says is against national interest. Wangchuk has denied all charges, calling them an attempt to divert attention. He stated, "I think that being in my jail will awaken the country more than being outside." While the situation in Leh is reportedly normalizing with a heavy security presence, authorities are pursuing punitive action against instigators of the violence while also aiming to restart dialogue.
