Ladakhi activist Sonam Wangchuk was released from detention after nearly six months under the National Security Act. He was detained in September 2025 during protests demanding full statehood and constitutional safeguards for Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule. Speaking after his release, Wangchuk described his 170 days in jail as a reflective and transformative experience, saying, ‘I’m grateful for this to happen. It was like a sabbatical for higher education.’ He expressed no bitterness, stating, ‘Everyone must once in a lifetime go to jail, if not for crime and things, but for a cause.’ His wife, Geetanjali Angmo, said she hopes the legal process continues to its conclusion to set a precedent. Wangchuk emphasized that Ladakh’s movement has always sought dialogue with the government, and he questioned the need for preventive detention laws, calling them draconian and often misused.
