Kolkata Rape Case: National Commission For Women Takes Suo Moto Cognizance LIVE
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognizance of the brutal rape of a student inside a Kolkata law college, triggering national outrage and calls for justice. The intervention comes after three individuals, including a former TMC-linked student leader, were arrested in connection with the assault that occurred within the campus premises.
In an official statement, NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma condemned the incident and confirmed that notices have been sent to the West Bengal Police and college authorities, demanding an urgent status report and clarity on preventive measures.
The NCW’s action follows mounting pressure on local law enforcement and political leaders over the safety of women in educational institutions. Protests by student groups and women’s rights activists have also intensified across Kolkata.
