Heavy rainfall has inundated Kolkata, with the Met Department reporting 250 millimetres of rain in 24 hours, leading to the deaths of five people from electrocution. Life was severely disrupted on Tuesday morning, with widespread waterlogging stranding commuters and affecting public transport. Kolkata Metro services have been truncated, and some Eastern Railway trains have been rescheduled due to the deluge. The situation is compounded by its timing, just a week before Durga Puja, hampering festival preparations across the city. The Met Department has described this as a "record rainfall that Kolkata hasn’t witnessed in several years" and has issued an orange alert for the region. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation is working to pump out water from the submerged areas as the city braces for more rain.
