In an exclusive discussion with India Today, former IPS officer Kiran Bedi and women’s rights activist Yogita Bhayana addressed the rising death toll due to potholes and open drains in India. Kiran Bedi attributed the crisis to a ‘culture of negligence’ and the use of ‘unskilled labour’ by contractors who fail to provide training or supervision. She emphasized that the lack of accountability among junior and senior engineers leads to preventable tragedies. Yogita Bhayana highlighted the ‘softest target’ approach where authorities arrest poor labourers instead of fixing institutional accountability. Bhayana shared her personal frustration with the lack of response from authorities when reporting danger spots, stating that ‘everything is preventable’ if the system worked. Both experts called for a shift in administrative culture, with Bedi urging a focus on grievance redressal and Bhayana demanding jail time for negligent officials to instill fear and ensure public safety.
