Amid the West Asia war, the Strait of Hormuz and its cluster of strategically significant islands have become a focal point. KhargaIsland, located northwest in the Persian Gulf off Iran’s coast near Bushehr province, handles a majority of Iran’s crude oil exports and has massive oil storage infrastructure. The island was heavily bombed during the Iran-Iraq war and has also been attacked by missiles. Within the Strait of Hormuz itself, several islands play crucial roles. Keshma Island, the largest in the Persian Gulf, serves as a free trade zone and economic centre. Lerak Island is considered part of Iran’s layered defence system with top-secret military installations. Several islands remain disputed territory: Abu Musa, claimed by UAE, has huge oil and mineral potential but is controlled by Iran. The Greater Tumb and Lesser Tumb islands, seized by Iran in 1971 just before UAE’s formation, are used for surveillance of tanker routes and provide military staging points. Oman also has influence via the Musandam Peninsula. These islands allow Iran to monitor, control, and potentially disrupt shipping using anti-ship missiles, radar systems, and fast attack boats, which is why America is eyeing some of these islands to reduce Iran’s influence.
