As US-Iran tensions escalate, strategic focus has shifted to Kharg Island, Iranian territory that handles 90 percent of Iran’s oil and gas exports. The island, located just 20 kilometres off the Iranian coast, can accommodate 10 super tankers simultaneously. Iran has heavily fortified the 25-square-kilometre island with IRGC naval bases, an airstrip, drones, and troops, anticipating potential US attempts to forcibly occupy it. The US has been moving Marines and the elite 82nd Airborne, with approximately 6,000 to 7,000 troops committed to the theatre. However, capturing and defending the island poses extreme challenges due to its proximity to the Iranian coast and Iran’s intact rocket and drone forces. Alternative US targets could include smaller islands like Larak and Hormuz at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, Iran has stated it will not impose a blockade on vessels belonging to five friendly nations, including India.
