Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, describing it as ‘martyrdom at hands of wicked terrorists’ during the holy month of Ramadan. The Iranian media and Revolutionary Guard Corps, of which Khamenei was the head, announced the death through multiple sources. Ali Larijani, Secretary General of the National Security Council, is reported to be taking over as acting Supreme Leader, as Iran cannot afford a leadership vacuum during wartime. Larijani has vowed to avenge the death. The Assembly of Experts, a four-member council, will decide on the next permanent Supreme Leader. Potential successors include Khamenei’s son Mujtaba, Sadiq Larijani, Muhammad Yazdi, Mohsen Araki, or Hassan Khomeini, grandson of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khomeini. Massive gatherings have been reported outside the Supreme Leader’s residence as Iran faces internal dissent and external threats.
