Bangladesh is holding funeral prayers for Khaleda Zia, the country’s first female prime minister, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 80 after a prolonged illness.
The prayers are taking place at Dhaka’s Manik Mia Avenue, in front of the parliament complex, with political leaders, party workers and members of the public gathering to pay their final respects to one of the most influential figures in Bangladesh’s political history.
Khaleda Zia served twice as prime minister and led the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) for decades, shaping the country’s politics through a long and defining rivalry with Sheikh Hasina.
