A controversy has emerged in Kerala over an order by a Tehsildar and Deputy Collector to use school students for time-bound ‘SIR’ work, which relates to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The order seeks a list of students from the NSS, NCC, Scouts, and Guides to be engaged in this activity. Kerala’s General Education Minister V. Sivan Kutty stated that ‘school students cannot be used for such an activity as exams are coming near and this will affect their studies’. The minister has opposed the move, citing that it violates an existing Education Department order protecting class time and goes against the Right to Education Act.
