Kerala Latest News: Dressed in a green coat over her pale pink salwar-kameez, this is Dhanuja Kumari, a Haritha Karma Sena member in Kerala’s capital, Thiruvananthapuram.
From Monday to Saturday, she and her two teammates knock on the gates of houses in the Ravi Nagar area of the city seeking to collect plastic waste.
Dhanuja has lived a tough life. Her 48 years are etched on her face but she always wears it with a smile. She was in class 9, when her parents got her married to a Chenda artist, forcing her to drop out of school. But that did not stop her from taking her story out to the world.
She has authored a book, ‘Chengalchoolayile Ente Jeevitham’ or ‘My life in Chengalchoola’, which is now part of the curriculum for BA students in Kannur University and for MA students in Calicut University. The book is now in its fifth edition.
