A life convict in a 2011 rape and murder case escaped from the high-security Kannur Central Jail in Kerala, sparking a four-hour manhunt. The prisoner, who has only one arm, was later captured by police from a well in Kannur town after witnesses identified him. The escape has raised serious questions about security protocols at the facility, which has high walls and electric fencing. A local resident stated, "How can he jump from that jail? He can’t do it without a supporter." Jail DGP Balram Kumar Upadhyay has assured that the security lapse is being investigated and action will be taken. The convict was serving a life sentence, which the Supreme Court had commuted from a death penalty originally awarded in the sensational 2011 case.
