A special report on the recent hijab controversy at St. Rita’s Public School in Palluruthy, Ernakulam, which has been resolved following the intervention of Congress MP Hibi Eden. The father of the student, Anas, has stated that they will ‘abide by the rules of the institution and the child will be starting school from tomorrow without wearing a hijab’. The dispute arose when the eighth-grade student was denied entry for wearing a hijab, which is not part of the prescribed school uniform. This led to protests and a two-day shutdown of the institution. After a meeting involving the student’s parents, school management, and political leaders, the family agreed to comply with the school’s dress code to prevent the issue from being communalised. The school is set to resume normal operations.
