Congress leader Shama Mohammed has flagged the issue of low women representation in Kerala Congress ticket distribution, stating that women in Kerala Congress are being ignored. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has backed Mohammed’s concerns, stating that ‘when women are half the population, that they get only 9.8% of the seats is not fair’. Tharoor, who describes himself as an advocate for greater women’s representation and the women’s representation bill, acknowledged that political parties ‘have tended to be male-dominated’. Out of 92 declared Congress candidates for the Kerala elections, only 9 are women. Shama Mohammed, who was seeking a ticket from Kannur, reportedly tagged Rahul Gandhi on social media urging him to intervene and increase women’s share in ticket distribution. Congress troubleshooters are now reaching out to upset candidates over the ticket distribution issue as the state heads to polls in a matter of weeks.
