Kerala Artist Tom Vattakuzhy’s ‘Last Supper’ Painting Removed Citing Vulgarity | India Today News

In this report, India Today’s Shibi Mol KG details the controversy surrounding the removal of a painting by artist Tom Vattakuzhy from the ‘Edam’ session of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale. The artwork, which Christian groups alleged was a ‘vulgar’ distortion of Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘The Last Supper’ featuring a naked woman and nuns, sparked massive outrage and protests. Shibi Mol KG explains that the painting was withdrawn to ‘avoid any kind of disruption’ after the venue was temporarily shut down. The artist, Tom Vattakuzhy, clarified that the work was inspired by a play and ‘had nothing to do with the Last Supper’ or insulting religious faith. The segment highlights the clash between artistic freedom and religious sentiments in Kerala.
