The Rouse Avenue Court has discharged all 23 accused in the CBI’s Delhi Excise Policy case, including former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia. The court found insufficient evidence to even frame charges against any of the accused, stating the case lacked material evidence for trial. This represents a significant setback for the Central Bureau of Investigation, which was the primary investigating agency. The accused included AAP leader Vijay Nair, liquor barons, and Delhi excise department officials. The discharge means the court determined there was not enough evidence for the accused to face trial, rather than an acquittal after trial. The case had led to Kejriwal stepping down as Delhi Chief Minister. The court also criticized the CBI’s use of the term ‘South Group’ for accused from southern states, calling it discriminatory. The discharge may also impact the related Enforcement Directorate case, which was based on the CBI’s findings.
