A total shutdown was observed in Katra, the base camp for the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra, as traders and activists protested against a proposed ropeway project. The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sanghar Samiti organized the bandh, claiming the ropeway from Tarakot to Sanjee Chhat would bypass traditional routes and devastate the local economy and environment. Protesters displayed ‘No Ropeway’ banners, closing shops and markets in a significant show of dissent. While the Jammu and Kashmir administration and the Shrine Board maintain that the project aims for modernization and that no decision will be taken without consulting stakeholders, the business community fears a loss of livelihood. Activists warned of intensifying the agitation if the government does not roll back the decision. The Shrine Board further emphasized its commitment to the development of Katra as a spiritual hub, assuring residents that their interests would be protected through ongoing dialogue.
