Amidst the global challenge of climate change impacting water resources and causing extreme weather events like floods in Northern India, individual efforts in conservation are emerging. In South Kashmir, Ruhail Makbul Sheikh has been working for 13 years to spread awareness about water conservation. He travels to various water bodies, educating communities on securing safe drinking water and preserving their local environment. This work has earned him the ‘Water Hero Award’ from the Government of India, a first for anyone in Jammu and Kashmir. The man who identifies himself as the ‘Water Warrior of Kashmir’ says his main focus is to create awareness among people in both rural and urban areas regarding water conservation, water quality, and waste management. While he believes there are miles to go, his work sets an inspiring example for individual-led change in tackling the nation’s water crisis.
