The death toll in the stampede at a Karur rally on Saturday evening has risen to 40, according to the Tamil Nadu government. 67 people are still undergoing treatment in hospital. In the aftermath, an FIR has been registered against functionaries of the TVK party. The TVK has approached the Madras High Court, seeking an independent probe and a suomoto hearing.
