Thirty-nine people have died following a stampede at a political rally for actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party in Karur. The incident occurred in a narrow, constricted two-way street, raising questions about why permission was granted for the event at that location. Reports from the ground indicate a massive failure in crowd assessment, with only 500 police personnel deployed for a crowd estimated to be over 30,000, far exceeding the 10,000 people the TVK party allegedly told police would attend. The onus is being placed on both the police and the TVK for the tragedy. A key point of criticism is that Vijay, "for somebody who wanted to project himself as the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, has fled the situation where he was directly responsible for." Apart from a single social media post, Vijay has reportedly remained silent.
