The event saw an estimated 50,000 people gather in a space meant for 10,000, with only 500 police personnel deployed. The tragedy is being called a ‘man-made disaster’, with questions raised about the lack of crowd control, basic facilities, and emergency access. While other political leaders visited the site, Vijay and his party’s absence has drawn criticism. One expert stated, "Vijay has to take complete responsibility for what has happened. And he has just run away from the scene, which is very, very sad." The role of the local administration in allowing the event to proceed despite the swelling crowd is also under scrutiny.
