Employees of Karnataka’s state-owned transport corporations have initiated an indefinite strike, severely disrupting public transport across the state. The unions are demanding payment of 38-month salary arrears and a wage revision effective January 1, 2024. This action follows failed talks between the workers’ unions and the Karnataka government. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has appealed to the unions to end the strike, offering to clear two years of arrears. However, union leaders expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s offer, stating they have not received assurance on salary revision. The strike has left passengers facing significant difficulties, with buses remaining empty in many areas and metro stations experiencing increased crowds. A union leader stated, "The issue is now narrowed down to 24 months arrears from government." The ruling party has also countered claims from the opposition regarding the state’s financial health.
