Karnataka Social Welfare Minister HC Mahadevappa has intensified the leadership debate within the state Congress by publicly pitching for a Dalit Chief Minister. Speaking on the significant Dalit population and their loyalty to the party, Mahadevappa stated, ‘Everyone should come together and at an appropriate time, make a suitable Dalit leader the Chief Minister of the state.’ He emphasized that while Siddaramaiah currently holds the post, the right circumstances must arise for a Dalit leader to take charge. This demand adds a new layer to the ongoing power struggle between Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar. Mahadevappa urged the Congress High Command to recognize the Dalit community as the party’s backbone and ensure they receive representation at the highest level. The minister’s remarks come as the party leadership reportedly prepares to summon state leaders to resolve the simmering internal tussle over the next leadership role in Karnataka.
