A political firestorm has erupted in Karnataka over Minister Priyank Kharge’s letter to the Chief Minister, urging that government employees be prohibited from participating in RSS events. Kharge argued, ‘I’m not asking to make any new rules. There are already service conduct rules of the government of Karnataka. I’m just asking them to follow it.’ His move is based on the Karnataka Civil Services (Conduct) Rules, which mandate political neutrality for government servants. The proposal has drawn sharp criticism from the BJP, which has defended the RSS and questioned Kharge’s motives. The Karnataka government is now reportedly consolidating existing orders and may issue a new Government Order (G.O.) to enforce these rules, stopping short of a new bill for now.
