The Karnataka government has ordered a new state-wide caste census, scheduled to run from September 22 to October 7, with a final report due by December. This socio-economic survey is estimated to cost around 460 crores. The process will see 1.8 lakh government teachers conducting voluntary household visits, posing 60 questions covering caste, religion, health, and occupation. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated the objective is to remove "all the inequalities within the society" and ensure "social welfare schemes can be catered to certain communities based on their population." The decision follows criticism of a 2015 census report. The opposition BJP has labelled the new census as "politically motivated," alleging it is a potential misuse of funds and an attempt to divide society for political gain, especially when a national census is also planned.
