Tamil actor and politician Kamal Haasan’s remarks on language have prompted a sharp response from Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The controversy centres on Haasan’s recent statement suggesting Kannada "was born out of Tamil", made during a public event in Chennai.
Reacting to the comment, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said, “Kannada has a long-standing history. Poor Kamal Haasan, he is unaware of it.” The remark has been widely criticised by pro-Kannada groups and political leaders in Karnataka.
The statement was made during an event promoting Haasan’s upcoming film Thug Life, scheduled for release on 5 June. Haasan, founder of the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), said in Tamil, “Your language (Kannada) was born out of Tamil, so you too are included,” while referring to the presence of Kannada actor Shivarajkumar at the event.
BJP’s Karnataka unit chief, Vijayendra Yediyurappa, condemned Haasan’s statement, calling it "uncultured behaviour" and "the height of arrogance". He said, “An actor who has acted in many Indian languages, including Kannada, must show respect to all. He has insulted Kannada and Kannadigas.”
