The Supreme Court is set to hear a writ petition filed by Justice Yashwant Verma challenging the findings of an in-house judicial panel. The case follows a March 14 incident where a fire at the judge’s official residence in Delhi led to the discovery of a large amount of cash. A panel of three High Court judges, constituted by then-CJI Sanjeev Khanna, drew adverse inferences, concluding the currency was under the control of Justice Verma or his family. Justice Verma has denied the allegations, stating the probe was "unfair and lacking due process and that key facts were still not investigated." Concurrently, an impeachment motion recommended by former CJI Khanna, and backed by over 100 MPs, has been moved to the Lok Sabha. The Speaker is anticipated to establish a statutory inquiry committee under the Judges Inquiry Act to investigate the matter.
