The Supreme Court has raised serious concerns over large-scale tree felling on land adjacent to the University of Hyderabad, describing the environmental impact as alarming.
On Wednesday, a bench comprising Justices B R Gavai and Augustine George Masih questioned the Telangana government’s urgency in clearing trees over nearly 100 acres in the Kancha Gachibowli area.
“You must come up with a plan on how you will restore those 100 acres,” the bench told senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing the state. “If you want to protect your chief secretaries, then tell us how you intend to restore it,” the Court warned.
All development activities on the land have been ordered to stop. “Until further orders, no activity of any sort, except the protection of existing trees, shall take place,” the Court directed.
The justices expressed shock at videos showing herbivorous animals fleeing the area. “We are surprised to see animals running, bitten by stray dogs. Where are they to seek shelter?” Justice Gavai remarked. The Court added it would not rely on explanations from bureaucrats or ministers, but on facts concerning environmental and wildlife protection.
