The closure of the Jammu & Kashmir National Highway following rainfall has created a crisis for the region’s apple growers. With the route for vehicular traffic shut for over 15 days, thousands of trucks loaded with harvested apples are unable to reach markets, crippling the fruit industry, which is described as the backbone of the Kashmir Valley’s economy. Protesting farmers state the industry has lost "about 1200 crore rupees" due to the blockade. Growers have appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and local authorities to open the highway for at least two days to save their perishable produce. The report from Srinagar also highlights demands for long-term solutions, like a dedicated cargo train from Sopore, to prevent recurring losses for farmers.
