The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly witnessed massive uproar as MLAs from the ruling National Conference and the PDP staged protests demanding a discussion on the West Asia War. NC MLA Tanvir Sadiq displayed pictures of slain Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on the assembly floor. PDP and NC legislators jumped into the well of the House, raising slogans such as ‘Israel Murdabad’ and ‘Trump Murdabad’, and demanding India express solidarity with Iran. The MLAs called for a statement from Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who was present in the House. BJP MLAs staged a walkout, saying NC and PDP were unnecessarily disrupting proceedings and that other important issues of Jammu and Kashmir should be addressed instead. BJP leader Ravinder Raina criticised the protest as political drama, questioning why similar demonstrations were not held when innocent Kashmiris were killed by terrorists. The protests reflect religious closeness felt by Kashmir’s Shia community towards Iran.
