Nearly 44 years after leaving the presidency in a period of political defeat, Jimmy Carter returned to Washington in a solemn and historic state funeral that united Americans in honoring the 39th president. Beginning Tuesday, three days of state funeral rites commenced in the Capitol Rotunda, where Carter’s casket rested on the Lincoln catafalque, the same platform used for Abraham Lincoln in 1865.
The ceremony was marked by profound respect and bipartisan representation. Senators Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, both Democrats from Carter’s home state of Georgia, led the congressional delegation. Vice President Kamala Harris, cabinet members from President Joe Biden’s administration, and three Supreme Court justices—John Roberts, Brett Kavanaugh, and Elena Kagan—joined the nation in mourning.
