Following two air crashes in Jharkhand and Andaman within 24 hours, aviation safety concerns have intensified in India. An air ambulance operated by Redbird Airways crashed in dense forest near Chhatra, Jharkhand, killing all seven on board, including a burn patient, doctor, two pilots, and patient attendants. The aircraft lost communication shortly after takeoff from Ranchi. Separately, a Pawan Hans helicopter made an emergency landing into the sea near Port Blair; all seven on board were rescued. An India Today RTI reveals that DGCA’s Airworthiness Wing has 136 out of 310 positions vacant, while the Air Safety Wing has 30 out of 116 positions vacant. An aviation expert stated that the issue is not vacancies but mindset, criticising the absence of qualified safety analysts and calling for an independent safety board with accident analysis specialists. Concerns were raised over delayed crash investigation reports and lack of specialist investigators in India.
