NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has made a groundbreaking discovery by detecting water ice in the rings surrounding asteroid Chariklo. Located over two billion miles away, Chariklo is the largest known member of the centaur population and is too distant for most telescopes to observe clearly. Using a rare celestial event called an occultation, Webb was able to capture new details about the asteroid’s thin ring system. Scientists believe the rings are made of icy particles mixed with dark debris from a past collision. This marks the first stellar occultation ever observed by JWST. The discovery opens a new chapter in studying distant objects in our solar system.
