External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed Parliament on the escalating West Asia conflict, revealing that the Cabinet Committee on Security met under Prime Minister’s chairmanship on 1 March to assess the situation. India has approximately one crore citizens living and working in Gulf nations, with a few thousand in Iran. The government issued multiple travel advisories starting 28 February, urging Indians to leave Iran and exercise caution across the region. The Indian Embassy in Tehran facilitated relocation of students and assisted pilgrims and businesspersons. Two Indian mariners have been killed in attacks on merchant shipments, with one missing. The Ministry of External Affairs established a special control room to monitor the situation. Approximately 67,000 Indian nationals have returned through facilitated commercial and non-scheduled flights from various Gulf countries. Jaishankar emphasised that the Gulf region accounts for 200 billion US dollars in annual trade and is crucial for India’s energy security.
