External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar clarified India’s decision to allow the Iranian warship IRIS Lavan to dock in Kochi, stating it was taken purely on humanitarian grounds and in line with international maritime law. The IRIS Lavan, part of the International Fleet Review, reported technical issues and approached India days before the IRIS Dena incident near Sri Lanka. India approved the request on March 1, and its 183 crew members are staying at naval facilities in Kochi. Jaishankar also referred to the ill-fated IRIS Dena, which faced a similar situation in Sri Lankan waters before being torpedoed by a US submarine, killing over 80 Iranian sailors. Around 32 were rescued by the Sri Lankan Navy. Government sources have rejected allegations that India shared intelligence, calling the claims baseless. The Indian Navy deployed two ships for search and rescue operations following the IRIS Dena incident.
