In a first-of-its-kind move in Jammu and Kashmir, AAP legislator Mehraj Malik from Doda has been arrested under the Public Safety Act (PSA). The order was issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Doda, citing Malik’s activities as prejudicial to the maintenance of public order. The detention has triggered a political storm, with J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stating the "PSA is being misused against an elected representative, calling it a blow to democracy." This is the first time a sitting MLA in the region has been booked under the PSA, which allows for detention of up to two years without trial. Opposition parties including the PDP, People’s Conference, CPI(M), and Congress have strongly condemned the arrest. Malik’s party, AAP, has called the move undemocratic and warned of protests. The arrest occurred a day after Malik clashed with the District Commissioner.
