This follows the suspension of the Amarnath Yatra on August 3rd, which the government attributed to adverse weather. The statehood rumors gained momentum after meetings between Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and President Draupadi Murmu. While J&K CM Omar Abdullah expressed cautious hope for positive developments during the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament, the Congress party has questioned the government’s motives. The Supreme Court had directed in December 2023 for statehood to be restored as soon as possible. A key promise is being recalled: "Prime Minister and Home Minister particularly, that first election, then statehood. Now elections are over."
