Large wildfires have broken out on the outskirts of Jerusalem, forcing Israeli authorities to evacuate thousands of residents within just 24 hours. The fires, which erupted on Memorial Day – a national day of remembrance for fallen soldiers – are being described as some of the worst in the country’s history.
At least 13 people have been reported injured so far, though there have been no fatalities. Even as Israel has asked for help from neighbouring countries, it currently at war with all its neighbours sharing a land border. Israel’s war against Gaza still rages on, despite the ceasefire agreement earlier this year. The Gaza health ministry claims over 40000 people have been killed, and cities like Rafah have been bombed and razed to the ground. The other neighbour, Yemen and Lebanon, allies of Palestine, also share a decades long conflict with the Israeli state.
Videos and images shared on social media show flames spreading along the hills near Route 1 – the main highway between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Thick smoke has blanketed the area, and some drivers were seen abandoning their vehicles and fleeing the flames.
