According to a Wall Street Journal report, Israeli officials aim to inflict sufficient damage on Iran’s police state from the air to enable popular uprising on the ground. While Israel has previously weakened Tehran through military action and covert operations, officials have now concluded they must push for regime change. The report indicates nuclear talks remain a major aspect of the escalation. Iranian media reports state that following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Assembly of Experts has elected Mojtaba Khamenei as the next Supreme Leader. Mojtaba Khamenei, sanctioned by the United States in 2019, is considered a hardliner, with his appointment reportedly supported by the IRGC to ensure continuation of the regime’s ideology.
