US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has stated that American military operations against Iran are not an endless war, distinguishing the current action from past conflicts in Iraq. Hegseth clarified that the operation aims to destroy Iran’s missile threat, naval capabilities, and nuclear weapons programme. He stated that the former Iranian regime had a chance to make a deal but Tehran was stalling. Hegseth referred to the ‘former regime’ and said ‘this is not a so-called regime change war, but the regime sure did change’, suggesting the United States believes it has achieved key objectives following the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Secretary emphasised that this operation is a clear, devastating, and decisive mission, contrasting it with what he termed 20 years of nation-building wars. The remarks come amid Iranian retaliation that has expanded to include attacks on commercial interests across multiple Gulf nations.
