Defence analyst Sandeep Unnithan discusses how kamikaze drones have emerged as disruptive technology in 21st century warfare, levelling the playing field between superpowers and less powerful nations. He highlights Iran’s tactical triad comprising cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and Shahed 136 drones, which are now being copied by the United States. Unnithan emphasises that despite having ‘the finest engineers, the finest MSMEs, the finest startups’, India has not been able to build low-cost drone systems at scale. He states the numbers being produced are ‘laughable’ at 50, 100, or 150 units, when tens or hundreds of thousands are needed. Unnithan praises India’s indigenous air defence systems including Akash series, IACCS, and BrahMos missiles, noting India’s successful operation showcased a comprehensive defence array. He stresses India must learn from the West Asian conflict and begin mass production of these systems immediately, as such conflicts could be imposed on the country tomorrow.
